The current roadmap for annual excise tax increases until 2027, with 5% for alcohol and 10% for cigarettes, should be revised to impose higher taxes, according to Health Minister Izabela Leszczyna.
She believes the economic accessibility of alcohol and cigarettes in Poland is too high and stated this falls under the purview of the Finance Minister. Leszczyna emphasized that the planned increases in the roadmap are insufficient, as Poland continues to have some of the lowest taxes in Europe.
She advocated for greater adjustments, particularly criticizing low taxes on novel tobacco products and suggesting additional environmental fees for disposable items. The excise tax hikes are part of a scheduled adjustment starting from 2022.
