Poland the European leader in gasoline and diesel price increases

It's been a good year for fuel retailers in Poland. Gasoline and diesel prices at Polish stations, excluding taxes, rose the most in Europe. Comparing data from the European Commission's weekly bulletins with information on retail fuel prices in individual EU countries from the beginning and end of the year, it can be seen that Poland was the clear leader in terms of the rate of fuel price growth in 2022.
Over the past year, the retail price of a liter of gasoline without taxes in our country increased by 44 percent, and diesel – by more than 71 percent. Such a strong price increase cannot be explained by a jump in global oil prices. If not for the inflation shield – that is, the reduction of VAT from 23 percent to 8 percent – gasoline in Poland would be among the most expensive in Europe, also in nominal terms.
