Prof. Balcerowicz: Poland Needs Depoliticization, Not Nationalization of the Economy

Professor Leszek Balcerowicz, Chairman of the Forum for Civic Development, has criticized Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s recent calls for the “nationalization” and “repolonization” of the Polish economy, calling the terms vague and potentially misleading.
“I don’t know what ‘repolonization’ means – it’s a murky slogan open to different interpretations,” Balcerowicz said.
He argues that what Poland truly needs is the depoliticization of the economy through further privatization, rather than expanding state control. According to Balcerowicz, Poland, alongside Turkey, has one of the highest levels of state ownership among OECD countries. Increasing state influence could reverse progress toward a market economy and conflict with EU membership rules, he warned.
Tusk’s comments at the European Forum for New Ideas in Warsaw sparked concerns on financial markets, leading to a sell-off of state-controlled companies on the WIG20 index, as investors fear moves away from profit maximization could harm minority shareholders.
