Large-Scale Energy Storage and Hydrogen Key to Low-Emission Transport in Europe

The transformation of European transport is accelerating, especially in the "last mile" logistics segment. However, the share of fully electric vehicles in Polish companies has dropped from 18 to 12 percent, reflecting a broader European slowdown in electromobility. Key barriers include limited public charging infrastructure, high vehicle costs, and insufficient access to charging at company sites.

“To move forward, we need affordable, large-scale energy storage. The future lies primarily in hydrogen,” Andrzej Gemra, public affairs and electromobility expert at Renault Group, said.

He emphasized that last-mile transport is electrifying fastest due to high population density and pollution levels in urban areas.

Road transport remains the EU’s largest emitter, responsible for 73 percent of transport-related greenhouse gas emissions in 2024. While courier fleets are increasingly switching to electric due to e-commerce growth, long-distance trucking faces challenges.

“Electric batteries still fall short for trucks covering large distances,” Gemra explained.

Hydrogen, as both a fuel and energy carrier, could provide a sustainable solution in the coming years.
