Renewables are driving energy prices down as seen in drop in March

In March 2025, average electricity prices in Europe dropped significantly due to favorable weather and a surge in renewable energy production. The average SPOT market price was €90.97/MWh—over 30% lower than in February. In Poland, it reached €99.23/MWh. Solar and wind power generation soared, with photovoltaic output rising 66%, pushing renewables’ share of the energy mix to 43%, while coal dropped to 54%. Electricity demand in Poland fell by 13%.
Falling energy commodity prices and a 21% drop in CO₂ emission allowance costs also contributed. Futures prices declined, though Poland still recorded one of the highest 2026 contract prices (€102.23/MWh). Meanwhile, the Ministry of Climate is reviewing a return to mandatory energy exchange trading, though energy producers remain skeptical.
