The Bełchatów power plant is the biggest polluter in Europe again

Ember's analysis shows that the Bełchatów lignite-fired power plant was at the top of this infamous list for the 17th time. Kozienice power plant came forth and Opole power plant tenth. In total, Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE), to which these power plants belong, and Turów (for which Poland has to pay a huge fine), released 70.5 million metric tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere last year.
"In the face of the war in Ukraine, which forces governments to consider restricting Russian gas imports, emissions data show that coal continues to pose a serious threat to the climate. Recent analyzes have shown that the European Union is able to stop importing gas from Russia by the 2025 year without delaying the end of coal-based energy production, ensuring that climate goals remain within reach," Ember experts point out.
