GUS: Poland’s population is aging rapidly

Poland’s population is aging rapidly, posing major challenges for the labor market and social security system, according to a report by Statistics Poland (GUS). The aging process is driven by longer life expectancy combined with low birth rates. The old-age index now stands at 141, meaning there are 141 seniors for every 100 children, with a population gap of 2.2 million in favor of the elderly. By the end of 2024, Poland’s population had declined to 37.49 million, dropping by over 147,000 y/y.
The median age exceeded 43 years, with rural residents slightly younger than urban dwellers. GUS warns that unfavorable demographic trends will particularly impact smaller, aging regions.
