Baltic Reserves Could Boost Poland’s Energy Independence

Potential oil and gas deposits discovered near Wolin in the Baltic Sea may strengthen Poland’s energy security. Preliminary estimates suggest the field could hold up to 27 billion cubic meters of gas – around 1.5 times Poland’s annual consumption of 17 bcm – and as much as 30 million tons of crude oil, compared with the 20 million tons processed annually by Polish refineries.
Experts caution, however, that full-scale extraction remains distant. Further research, licensing, and a committed investor are required. Centralna Robeiń Petroleum, the license holder, has already announced plans to sell 100 percent of its shares, raising questions about the scale of the project’s real potential.
According to Wojciech Jakóbik of the Energy Security Center, the discovery is nonetheless a positive signal: global producers such as the US, Norway, and Arab countries continue to treat oil and gas as strategic resources. Domestic extraction would not only be cost-effective but also increase Poland’s independence and resilience.
