Cyberattacks against solar panels are very likely. NATO preparing

Europe’s energy grid faces a growing cyber threat due to the rapid spread of decentralized solar power installations. A single hacker, using vulnerabilities in solar panels, could access power capacities exceeding those of entire national grids, potentially destabilizing the system. Bloomberg reports that millions of residential photovoltaic (PV) systems create vast opportunities for cybercriminals.
A coordinated attack could disrupt the demand-supply balance, causing blackouts across Europe. NATO recently held cybersecurity drills in Sweden to address this risk—its first ever focused on renewables—prompted by geopolitical tensions and rising cyberattacks, now averaging 1,100 incidents weekly worldwide. Experts warn the threat is underestimated and call for urgent action to secure renewable energy infrastructure.
