Future of automotive industry bleak, possible 150,000 layoffs
Slower-than-expected growth in electromobility is failing to deliver the promised new jobs, while accelerating job losses in traditional automotive manufacturing. According to Polish Automotive Industry Association, Europe has lost over 150,000 jobs across carmakers and parts suppliers as vehicle production has fallen by more than 1.5 million units compared with pre-pandemic levels. Weak sales of electric vehicles are squeezing manufacturers from two sides: delaying returns on more than €250 billion invested in electrification and exposing firms to EU penalties for missing CO₂ targets.
Rising material costs, tighter regulations, and Europe’s aging population are also reducing demand for new cars. Industry leaders urge the European Commission to ease regulations to prevent further factory layoffs.
