Mayor of Katowice: depopulation defining the future of cities
Depopulation is no longer just a statistic — it is becoming a force that shapes the future of cities. According to the mayor of Katowice, Marcin Krupa, the answer lies not in short-term projects, but in long-term investments planned over decades, even if they initially spark controversy. He argues that while dialogue with residents is essential, cities must also make visionary decisions for future generations. Katowice is cited as an example of how long-term investments, such as the Culture Zone developed after the decline of mining, can transform a city’s economy and image.
Another key challenge is creating attractive, open residential districts with greenery and public spaces to attract new residents. Sustainable urban growth, Krupa says, requires balancing economics with quality of life and thinking far beyond immediate political cycles.
