Overdue consumer bills and loans in Poland surged by over PLN 2 billion to nearly PLN 86 billion in the first quarter of 2024, according to BIG InfoMonitor and BIK databases. Over 2.6 million Poles, or one in twelve adults, are struggling with overdue debts.
Sławomir Grzelczak, president of BIG InfoMonitor, noted that overdue bills typically spike in the first quarter due to excessive December spending. In 2023, arrears grew by PLN 4.7 billion, with a significant increase of PLN 2.1 billion in the first quarter of 2024 alone. The average debtor now owes over PLN 32,000, often leading to a debt spiral, which 32% of respondents cite as their biggest fear. The study by Quality Watch surveyed 1,090 adults in March 2024.
