The World Meteorological Organization reports that the number of natural disasters worldwide has quintupled over the past 50 years. At the same time, advancements in early warning systems and crisis management have reduced the death toll by threefold. Increasingly, satellite data plays a key role in these efforts, as demonstrated by the use of the new Poland’s Civil Security Hub system during the September floods in the southwest of the country.
"The Civil Security Hub was conceived when the Ministry of Development decided to increase Poland’s contribution to the European Space Agency, enabling us to effectively implement space-based solutions for civil security. Whether in rescue operations or crisis management, wherever we can assist people, we aim to leverage cutting-edge solutions. Satellite systems can provide a wealth of critical information," Dr. Jakub Ryzenko, head of the Crisis Information Centre at the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences, said.
