The European Commission has reported that 2023 ranks among the most devastating years for forest fires in Europe. Data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) indicates that, as of mid-November, over 400,000 hectares have burned across the continent. This figure surpasses the annual average of the past decade, highlighting the increasing severity of wildfires.
The Mediterranean region has been particularly affected, with countries like Greece, Spain, and Italy experiencing significant losses. In Greece, fires on the island of Rhodes led to the evacuation of approximately 30,000 people, including tourists. Similarly, Spain and Italy faced extensive damage to natural habitats and infrastructure.
