The EU’s unique institutional structure, comprising seven main institutions, eight bodies, and over 30 decentralized agencies, employs around 60,000 staff serving 450 million citizens. Despite its scale, concerns over inefficiency are growing.
“EU administration tends to expand and lose touch with citizens,” MEP Michał Kobosko said.
He pointed out overlapping roles and duplication across institutions, noting that some commissioners manage teams of up to 10,000 staff. Kobosko supports European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s push for reforms to streamline bureaucracy, cut redundancies, and demonstrate to Europeans that the EU can manage its resources efficiently.
