The European Commission has decided to send a reasoned opinion in relation to Poland’s failure to adopt a national radioactive waste management program that would comply with the requirements of the spent fuel management directive nuclear and radioactive waste, the Commission has informed. The EC also made a similar decision towards Bulgaria, Denmark, Greece, Lithuania and Romania.

In the EC’s assessment, the Polish National Plan for the management of radioactive waste and spent fuel from 2015 does not meet the requirements of the directive. Poland now has three months to take action. Otherwise, the Commission may decide to refer these cases to the EU Court of Justice.
