Slovakia Launches Hydrogen VTOL Project to Revolutionize Green Aviation

Engineers in eastern Slovakia are developing a groundbreaking hydrogen-powered aircraft capable of vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), backed by €64.8 million in EU funding. Led by aerospace firm Tomark Proton, the six-year H2 VTOL project aims to offer a clean alternative to helicopters and advance sustainable urban transport.
The initiative goes beyond aviation, including the development of lightweight hydrogen tanks, green hydrogen production, and infrastructure for a broader mobility ecosystem. International firms such as BMW and HDF Energy are already involved.
“This could trigger a revolution in hydrogen aviation,” Professor Juraj Sinay, advisor to Slovakia’s Economy Ministry, said.
The project is expected to create up to 5,000 indirect jobs, 16 research positions, and 20 new patents.
With growing global demand for low-emission transport, Slovakia’s hydrogen aircraft may soon help reshape the future of clean mobility in Europe and beyond.
