Poland Ranks 9th in Europe for Workforce Skills and Qualifications

Poland has placed ninth among 31 European countries in the latest edition of the European Skills Index (ESI), which measures workforce skills and qualifications, the Polish Economic Institute (PIE) reported. The ranking is led by the Czech Republic, which has topped every edition since the index was launched.
Poland scored 63.7 points in 2024, improving by four places and 12 points compared with 2017. The country’s strongest performance was in skills matching, where it ranked third in Europe with 76.7 points. Contributing factors included low long-term unemployment, relatively few involuntary part-time workers, and a small mismatch between qualifications and labor market needs.
However, Poland performed weaker in skills development (52.2 points, 17th place) and skills activation (59.1 points, 20th place). Challenges remain in adult learning participation and digital competencies, where Poland ranks near the bottom in Europe.
PIE emphasized that further investment in lifelong learning, digital skills, and youth employment is crucial to maintain competitiveness.
