EU to Provide €6 Billion Loan to Boost Ukraine’s Drone Production

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a €6 billion loan to support Ukraine’s rapidly expanding drone industry. The funding, unveiled during her State of the Union address on September 10, comes just days after Russia launched a large-scale drone attack that also violated Polish airspace.
The initiative, part of the European Rapid Action (ERA) program, includes the creation of a drone alliance with Ukraine. According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence, the country has the capacity to produce up to 10 million drones annually. Currently, around 80 percent of its attacks rely on unmanned aerial vehicles, which account for more than two-thirds of Russian equipment losses.
“Three and a half years into the full-scale war, its character has shifted – drones now play a decisive role. Ukraine’s efficiency and low-cost production set a benchmark Europe must harness,” MEP Michał Szczerba (Civic Platform) said.
