The heating sector in Poland faces a crisis, with many heat and power plants at risk of bankruptcy due to tariffs set by the Energy Regulatory Office (ERO) that fail to cover production costs, including rising CO2 emission expenses. Sławomir Wołyniec, president of Grupa Altum and EC Zagłębie Dąbrowskie, warns this could leave millions without heating or hot water.

This issue is systemic, with the sector reporting consistent losses since 2019. Solutions include revising heat tariffs to cover costs, ensuring penalties comply with proportionality laws, and adopting CO2 sequestration to utilize Poland's coal reserves emission-free. Urgent legislative action is required to stabilize the sector and modernize heating infrastructure sustainably.
