Polish people over 50 more entrepreneurial than EU average

People over 50 in Poland founded about 35,000 sole proprietorships last year. This is about 12 percent of all companies founded in Poland, according to a report by the Polish Economic Institute entitled "Entrepreneurs 50+." In this group of new entrepreneurs, men make up the majority (60 percent), but among retirees who start their own businesses – and there are also many of them – women are in the lead. Both genders cite the need for independence and the desire to use their acquired experience and knowledge as their main motivation. However, some of the respondents admit that it was the only way not to fall out of the labor market.
"The economic activity of people over 50 in Poland is slightly higher than the average in the European Union. In the EU, the average is 18 percent, meaning that 18 percent of people over 50 who are active in the labor market decide to start their own business. In Poland, this figure is 23 percent. Poland is in third place, taking into account all EU countries, with Greece and Italy ahead of us," Katarzyna Dębkowska, head of the economic foresight team at PIE, said.
