Young people great at using tech, but lost at work
Young employees entering today’s labor market are highly comfortable with digital tools, apps, and online communication, but many struggle with social and interpersonal skills. Members of Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2010, often grew up communicating through text messages and social media, with fewer face-to-face interactions. Remote education during the pandemic further limited opportunities to develop communication, negotiation, and conflict-resolution skills. As a result, some young workers have difficulty adapting to workplace expectations, which can lead to higher turnover and misunderstandings with managers.
Experts warn that if this trend continues, organizations may face a shortage of future leaders. Managers are encouraged to provide clearer guidance, foster open communication, and promote direct conversations to help younger employees build stronger interpersonal skills.
