Taking care of pollinating insects such as bees has a double benefit, scientists say. It helps improve crop yields and stabilize food supplies, including easing food crises.
Researchers from the University of Reading analyzed data collected from 200 studies on the impact of bees and other pollinating insects on crop stability.
They found a 32% reduction in yield fluctuations from sites visited by such insects compared to crops where they do not work. It suggests that they can mitigate supply problems and market price fluctuations.
According to the researchers, insects can help in situations such as the current crisis caused by high oil prices and the war in Ukraine. The country, for example, exports 10% of the world's wheat reserves and is the largest exporter of sunflower oil.
