Companies choosing restructuring over bankruptcy, creditors waiting repayment

In the first half of 2025, bankrupt Polish companies left PLN 31 million in unpaid debts, while firms in restructuring added PLN 126.6 million, leaving creditors owed a total of PLN 157.7 million, according to KRD and COIG. Courts declared 207 bankruptcies, slightly fewer year-on-year, while 2,610 restructuring proceedings were launched, signaling a preference for restructuring over liquidation. The hardest-hit sectors were industry, trade, construction, and transport, pressured by high costs and weaker foreign demand. Many bankruptcies were signaled years earlier through KRD listings. Commercial companies generated the largest unpaid debts, while nearly 1,000 entrepreneurs opted for personal bankruptcy.
Restructuring, though widespread, often burdens creditors with partial write-offs and long repayment timelines.
