GUS: demographic crisis reducing workers by 0.8% y/y
Poland is facing growing demographic challenges. According to the Central Statistical Office (GUS), by the end of May 2025 the number of employed people fell to 15 million, a drop of 0.8% y/y. At the same time, the workforce is aging: the median age of employees increased from 42 to 43, meaning half of working Poles are now over 43. This trend signals increasing pressure on the labor market as fewer young people enter employment. Industry remains a key sector, employing over 2.74 million people, or 18.3% of the workforce.
Employees working under employment contracts make up the majority (about 79%), while self-employed workers and assisting family members account for around 21%.
