Poland faces demographic squeeze
Poland’s population is projected to shrink to 33.7 million by 2050 from more than 37.4 million in 2025, according to Ministry of Finance data cited by Andrzej Kubisiak during the European Economic Congress in Katowice.
Kubisiak said the outlook for the next three decades is already clear, with both population decline and rapid ageing expected to reshape the economy. He noted that the ministry’s forecasts are also used by Social Insurance Institution in its calculations.
The sharpest drop is expected among working-age residents, which he described as the most serious economic risk. This group, defined as women aged 18-59 and men aged 18-64, is forecast to contract by 4.75 million people. At the same time, the share of retirees and those reaching retirement age is set to rise significantly.
