Polish construction companies fear they may play only a minor role in building Poland’s first nuclear power plant in Choczewo. According to Damian Kaźmierczak from the Polish Association of Construction Employers, there is a risk that foreign companies will benefit most from the project while Polish firms remain at the bottom of the value chain and fail to gain nuclear construction know how. The American contractor Bechtel is leading the project and could rely on established partners from abroad, possibly from Asia, to reduce costs and meet tight deadlines. Although some cooperation has begun, including a contract between Doraco and Bechtel for geotechnical works, many Polish companies say discussions lack clarity.
The Polish government wants the plant built on time, within budget and with strong domestic participation, but balancing these goals is difficult.
