Statistics show another increase in the number of suicide attempts in Poland

According to data from the Police Headquarters, in the five months of this year, nearly 9 percent more suicide attempts were recorded than in the same period last year. Among men, the number of attacks on their own life decreased by around 1 percent y/y and increased by more than 30 percent among women. Recently, one in three such attempts ended in death. Almost 15 percent of all assaults in the first five months of this year involved people aged 13-18. In this age group, the number of such cases increased by almost 80 percent y/y. Most of them took place in the area of operation of the Regional Police Headquarters in Gdańsk.
Dr. Joanna Stojer-Polańska, a criminologist from the SWPS University, emphasized that the increased number of suicide attacks is information about social and emotional problems, as well as conflicts within the family. These are multi-factorial situations and often build up over months or years. Perhaps we are now more sensitive to observing the effects of problems that started much earlier.
"Recently, we have had a lot to worry about. The armed conflict in Ukraine, high inflation and price rises, rising loan installments, and the increasing incidence of COVID. These are stressful situations that can intensify the symptoms associated with mental disorders. If we consider that a significant part of the population may be struggling with this, combined with further challenges, sometimes tragedy can occur," psychologist Michal Murgrabia from the ePsychologists pl platform added.
