ArcelorMittal Poland to temporarily suspend production in Sept in Dąbrowa Górnicza

Due to a surge in cheap imported steel, ArcelorMittal Poland will halt production at one of its blast furnaces in Dąbrowa Górnicza starting in September. The company cites worsening market conditions, including high energy prices, EU carbon emission costs, and inadequate trade protections, which have led to a flood of underpriced steel imports—mainly from Ukraine, Serbia, and Asia. Imports now cover up to 80% of Poland’s steel demand. Industry leaders and unions are urging government intervention, warning of possible protests.
Despite a slight increase in domestic production, falling prices and underused capacity threaten the sector. ArcelorMittal is also weighing long-term investments in greener technologies amid concerns over energy demand and raw material availability.
