French EDF changing priorities abroad, including Polish nuclear power plant

EDF, France’s nuclear energy leader, is scaling back international nuclear projects—including in Poland—to focus on domestic investments. Under CEO Bernard Fontana, EDF aims to cut costs by reducing foreign staff and exiting select overseas tenders. Although EDF had hoped to build Poland’s second nuclear power plant, its priorities have shifted toward European markets with higher success potential, like the UK, Sweden, and Finland.
While over 60 Polish companies have experience working with EDF on past reactor projects, future involvement may decline. EDF continues major projects like Hinkley Point C and plans six new reactors in France, but its heavy debt and past delays are prompting strategic refocusing and divestments in renewables abroad.
