According to ESPAD studies – global research conducted among youth – the most common drink for alcohol initiation in Poland is beer. This is due to several factors. Firstly, it is the cheapest and most affordable option, as the excise tax on beer is the lowest. Secondly, beer is widely advertised, making it the most recognizable alcohol among young people. It is often associated with sports, as it can be promoted in a sports context, and it is also known for its engaging commercials that create an atmosphere of fun. In Poland, beer accounts for the majority of alcohol sales, with 54 percent consumed being beer, 37 percent spirits, and 8 percent wine.

"Research confirms that the earlier the alcohol initiation, the greater the likelihood of problems with misuse and excessive consumption later on. Therefore, the state, as well as us producers, must make every effort to delay this initiation. The situation in Poland is such that beer is the most accessible type of alcohol," Emilia Rabenda, President of the Polish Spirits Industry Employers’ Union, said.
