Poles Haven’t Seen Coffee This Expensive in a Long Time

In May this year, ground coffee prices in stores rose 25.1 percent y/y, while instant coffee became 20.3 percent more expensive. Data for the entire first half of the year shows dynamic y/y increases. In April, prices rose by 16.6 percent and 11.9 percent, respectively, and in March, by 14.8 percent and 12.2 percent. In February, prices increased y/y by 7.3 percent and 5.7 percent – significantly smaller spikes than in January, when they rose by 14.7 percent and 13.1 percent y/y. In contrast, ground coffee prices rose by an average of 5.4 percent compared to the previous year, while instant coffee prices increased by 1 percent.
The authors of the analysis also report that the price hikes affect both premium and basic brands. They point to a broader trend of rising operational costs and limited availability of raw materials. They add that the situation with rising coffee prices in stores is unlikely to change anytime soon. The pace of increases may slow down temporarily, but over the longer term, the situation is expected to remain unsettled.
