Encryption standards assailed by growing sophistication of cybercriminals
Cybercriminals are increasingly stealing encrypted data that may be unreadable today but could be cracked in the future by quantum computers, Capgemini warns. The tactic, known as “harvest now, decrypt later,” creates major risks for companies holding long-lasting sensitive information such as customer data, financial records, medical files and trade secrets. Capgemini says 65% of firms worry that stolen data could later be used for pressure or blackmail, yet up to 30% still downplay quantum threats.
Preparing for post-quantum security will require years of work, including reviewing encryption, updating cryptographic libraries, replacing certificates and modernizing HSM systems. Capgemini warns that companies waiting for quantum computing to mature may act too late.
