Europe faces Asia shift

At the Economic Forum in Karpacz, experts warned that Europe’s reliance on protectionism risks undermining its position as economic power shifts toward Asia. Trade data highlights the imbalance: in 2024, Poland imported nearly €49 billion worth of goods from China but exported only €3.5 billion. Panelists, including representatives of the Polish Chamber of Commerce, the Sobieski Institute, and the Warsaw School of Economics, stressed that openness and long-term strategy are essential to attract investment and remain competitive.
Speakers pointed out that Asian economies plan decades ahead, while Europe often acts election to election. Overregulation, they cautioned, could cut off access to key technologies such as semiconductors and renewable energy components—most sourced from China. Without predictable rules and stronger institutional presence in Asia, Poland risks losing opportunities. The consensus: engagement, not isolation, will determine Europe’s economic future.
