Gaming and Tech Hub to Boost Katowice’s Growth

In an interview with Dr. Marcin Krupa, Mayor of Katowice, he outlines the city’s three key pillars for development: jobs, housing, and quality of life. A major milestone is the PLN 1.5 billion gaming and technology hub, the largest investment in Katowice’s history, aimed at attracting high-tech businesses.
The mining transition is nearly complete, with the number of mines reduced from eight to two. Outsourcing has created around 30,000 jobs, while former miners have shifted to construction or entrepreneurship. However, limited expansion space remains a challenge.
Depopulation is another concern, though new jobs and housing help slow the trend. Mayor Krupa also highlights the “gray Silesia” stereotype as a barrier to attracting students. Plans to merge Katowice with neighboring towns into a metropolitan city, improving investment appeal, have stalled due to political disagreements at the regional level.
