In an interview for the Polish-language magazine, “Wprost”, Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said that “I would consider signing the law on partnerships,” when pressed to talk about Poland’s LGBT+ community.
Critics, however, were quick to accuse Duda of “pork-barrel” politics to woo moderate voters. He seeks re-election in 2020.
According to the latest statistics, 85.8 percent of Poland’s population is Catholic.
Jarosław Kaczyński, the de facto leader of the ruling right-wing populist Law and Justice (PiS) party, has demonized the LGBT+ community and said: “the LGBT movement and gender threaten our identity, threaten our nation, threaten the Polish state.”
Duda is a PiS ally. PiS has been accused of working hand in glove with the Catholic church. Archbishop Marek Jędraszewski of Kraków has compared the LGBT ideology to “rainbow plague” and called it a “dangerous disease” in his homily.
Whether or not the bill will be passed in the PiS-controlled parliament before the Polish head of state can ratify it, remains to be seen. But skeptics state that it is highly unlikely.
