Daron Acemoglu comes to Poznan to send message about liberal democracy
Speaking in Poznań, economist and Nobel Prize winner Daron Acemoglu argued that liberal democracy once fulfilled three major promises: shared economic growth, strong public services, and meaningful political participation. After World War II, mass production created jobs and rising wages, helping spread prosperity across society. Companies like Ford Motor Company and General Motors expanded by hiring large numbers of workers, including unskilled laborers.
However, the digital and AI-driven economy has weakened this model. Firms can now grow without employing more people, reducing workers’ share of national income and increasing inequality. Acemoglu warned that this trend is eroding trust in democracy, especially among younger generations. He called for renewed democratic institutions focused on workers, public goods, and shared prosperity.
