Defence money flows
Poland has begun signing the first contracts financed through the European Union’s new SAFE defence-loan programme, marking a significant step in the bloc’s effort to strengthen military capabilities and reduce dependence on non-European suppliers. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said around 40 agreements worth a combined PLN 100 billion are expected to be signed by May 30, with more than 10,000 Polish companies likely to benefit as suppliers, subcontractors and technology partners.
Poland could ultimately access up to EUR 43.7 billion in low-interest SAFE financing, making it one of the programme’s largest beneficiaries. Beyond military procurement, the initiative is expected to support domestic manufacturing, advanced engineering and research activities, providing a major boost to Poland’s industrial base amid heightened security concerns across Europe.
