Trump gives EU until 4 July, threatens higher duties on European cars
US President Donald Trump announced that he is giving the European Union until July 4 to implement the terms of a trade agreement reached with the United States in July 2025. If the EU fails to comply, Washington may sharply increase tariffs on European goods, including raising car tariffs from the previously agreed 15% to 25% or higher. Trump accused the EU of delaying the removal of tariffs on American industrial products and agricultural imports.
The agreement’s implementation has stalled in the European Parliament, where some member states and lawmakers seek additional safeguards in case the US violates the deal. Despite tensions, negotiations continue, with further talks scheduled for May 19. Trump and Ursula von der Leyen also discussed Iran and agreed that the country must not obtain nuclear weapons.
