Inflation tops forecasts in January
Inflation picked up at the start of 2026, coming in above market expectations, according to preliminary data from Poland’s Central Statistical Office (GUS). Consumer prices rose 2.2% year-on-year in January and 0.6% month-on-month, compared with analyst forecasts of 1.9% and 0.6% respectively.
Price pressures varied across categories. Food and non-alcoholic beverages were up 2.4% annually and 1.3% versus December, while alcoholic beverages and tobacco recorded the sharpest annual rise, climbing 7.0% year-on-year. Housing costs increased 2.9% annually and 1.3% month-on-month, with energy prices rising 3.4% and 1.9% respectively.
Transport was the main deflationary category, with prices falling 5.1% year-on-year and 2.1% month-on-month. Fuel for private transport dropped 7.1% annually and 2.4% compared with December.
For comparison, inflation stood at 2.4% year-on-year in December 2025, with prices flat month-on-month.
