AI Reshapes Global Jobs
Artificial intelligence is beginning to reshape labor markets, with investors and economists warning of growing disruption across industries. Goldman Sachs analysts said faster AI adoption could push US unemployment higher this year, noting that technology drove an estimated 5,000–10,000 net monthly job losses in vulnerable sectors in 2024. Reuters data shows AI already linked to about 7% of planned layoffs in January.
Companies worldwide are restructuring around automation. Polish media group Agora plans to cut up to 166 roles, while Allianz will eliminate as many as 1,800 jobs in travel insurance. Amazon confirmed 16,000 corporate layoffs, and Autodesk is reducing about 7% of staff to prioritize cloud and AI projects.
Dow plans to cut 4,500 jobs, HP aims to eliminate 4,000–6,000 by 2028, and Meta, Nike and Pinterest are also trimming headcount as investments shift toward AI. While some firms expect new roles to emerge, current restructuring suggests a short-term labor market shake-up before gains materialize.
