Katowice airport eyes Chinese exports

Katowice Airport (Wojciech Korfanty) plans to expand its role as a key logistics hub, particularly for Chinese exports. In autumn 2024, it launched direct cargo flights to Urumqi, China, and expects freight traffic to reach 40,000 tons this year, bolstered by the redirection of exports from the U.S. to Europe. The airport is also expanding its infrastructure, including temporary cargo facilities in reserve hangars and regular flights to Frankfurt, Europe's largest cargo hub. With passenger traffic up 18% in Q1 2024, Katowice is projected to handle 7.2 million passengers this year, boosting revenue. The airport’s investments, totaling PLN 1.5 billion by 2032, include a multimodal cargo hub with military applications, scheduled for completion in 2026. Despite challenges, the airport's strategic investments during the pandemic have paid off, enhancing profitability and capacity.
