New Greenland Government Forms Ahead of U.S. Visit

Greenland’s new coalition government is set to form as U.S. Vice President JD Vance arrives at the Pituffik Space Base on Friday. Four out of five parliamentary parties are expected to sign the coalition agreement today, following recent elections.
The new administration, led by 33-year-old Jens-Frederik Nielsen of the Demokraatit party, unites centrist, liberal, and socialist factions, holding 23 out of 31 seats. The pro-independence Naleraq party remains outside the coalition, pushing for a faster path to independence from Denmark.
Vice President Vance’s visit has stirred controversy, especially after planned public events were scaled back amid local opposition and Danish government concerns. Accompanying Vance are Energy Secretary Chris Wright, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Senator Mike Lee.
The visit underscores rising U.S. interest in Greenland, with Nielsen recently criticizing President Trump’s calls for U.S. control over the island.
