Poland May Need Nuclear Weapons

With rising geopolitical threats, the question arises – should Poland possess nuclear weapons? Maintaining them would come at a significant cost – but one that could be managed within Poland’s defense budget.
Poland could acquire nuclear weapons through cooperation with France or the United Kingdom – allowing for the deployment of warheads on its territory as part of reducing reliance on U.S. security guarantees.
The estimated annual maintenance cost for a smaller arsenal (30 warheads) is $0.6-1.1 billion, while a larger arsenal (50 warheads) would cost $1.1-1.8 billion – representing 1.8-5.1 percent of Poland’s defense budget.
From an economic standpoint, Poland can afford nuclear weapons – but the decision ultimately lies with society and policymakers.
