The retail industry welcomes the six-month postponement of Poland’s deposit system, initially planned for January 1, 2025, but finds it insufficient. Maciej Ptaszyński, President of the Polish Chamber of Commerce (PIH), stated that a delay until January 2026 would be more appropriate.
“The six-month postponement is a step in the right direction, but not enough. We believe it should be delayed by at least a year, to January 1, 2026,” Ptaszyński said.
He emphasized that other countries have had more time to implement such systems and that a longer delay would benefit the retailers and consumers.
The deposit system will apply to retail outlets over 200 sqm and cover aluminum cans, reusable glass bottles, and plastic bottles. Packaging for milk and dairy products will be excluded. Customers will pay a deposit at checkout, which can be refunded without the need for a receipt upon returning the packaging.
