President’s veto will hit job market as Ukrainians lose residence and legal employment

President Karol Nawrocki vetoed three bills, including an amendment extending aid and legal residence rights for Ukrainians in Poland. As a result, from October 1, 2025, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians could lose the right to stay and work legally, despite EU decisions prolonging temporary protection. Experts warn this will hurt both migrants and Polish employers, who rely heavily on Ukrainian workers—around 800,000 currently employed, making up 65% of all foreign workers. Business groups stress that sudden uncertainty could severely damage the labor market.
Nawrocki also blocked deregulation measures in tax law and energy, aimed at easing penalties for minor errors and simplifying renewables rules. Critics argue the veto harms businesses and the economy.
