Sejm Lifts Immunity of Kaczyński and Other PiS MPs Amid Legal Troubles

On March 6, 2025, the Sejm voted to lift the immunity of PiS chairman Jarosław Kaczyński, with 236 MPs in favor and 200 against. The motion was filed by MEP Krzysztof Brejza, who seeks to sue Kaczyński for defamatory statements made during the Pegasus inquiry committee. Kaczyński accused Brejza of serious crimes, which Brejza denies. Kaczyński, who was unable to attend the committee meeting due to medical reasons, claims he was fulfilling his duty by speaking the truth.
In addition to Kaczyński, the Sejm also lifted the immunity of former Minister of National Defense Mariusz Błaszczak, regarding the declassification of a military document in September 2023. The document, detailing Poland’s defense plans, allegedly exceeded Błaszczak's authority.
The Sejm also approved the arrest and detention of PiS MP Dariusz Matecki, who is under investigation for his involvement in the Justice Fund, suspected of rigging subsidies and embezzling public funds. Matecki waived his immunity, leading to the vote becoming a formality.
These developments reflect the increasing legal and political troubles facing PiS members, with several high-profile cases currently unfolding.
