Warsaw, Berlin sign defense pact
Poland's defense minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Germany's Boris Pistorius signed a new bilateral defense cooperation agreement in Warsaw on June 17, replacing a framework deal from 2011. The timing was deliberate: the signing fell on the 35th anniversary of the Polish-German Treaty of Good Neighbourship.
The pact covers joint exercises, infrastructure development, cybersecurity, space and military mobility, plus shared responsibility for Baltic Sea security. Pistorius announced a joint exercise, "Grand Eagle," for November 2026, involving more than 1,200 troops transiting through Poland. Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that 30 percent of Polish exports go to Germany and called for deeper economic ties alongside the military relationship. Germany's foreign minister had separately acknowledged Berlin's view of Poland needs updating.
