Poland’s Finance Ministry is preparing changes to the public health law that would increase the sugar tax on drinks and expand it to new product categories. The government says the current fee has become less effective, as sales of carbonated drinks initially fell after its introduction but later returned to previous levels.

The fixed fee for drinks containing up to 5 g of sugar per 100 ml, or any sweetener, would rise from PLN 0.50 to PLN 0.70. The variable fee for each gram of sugar above 5 g per 100 ml would double from PLN 0.05 to PLN 0.10, while the fee for caffeine or taurine would rise from PLN 0.10 to PLN 1. The maximum fee would increase from PLN 1.20 to PLN 1.80 per liter.

The tax would also cover all concentrates, some drink-form dietary supplements, and selected juice-based drinks with caffeine, taurine, or sweeteners. Most revenue goes to the National Health Fund.
