ArcelorMittal Poland Gives Swedish Rails a Second Life
ArcelorMittal Poland’s Dąbrowa Górnicza plant, a key rail supplier to Sweden since 2022, has expanded its partnership with Trafikverket, the Swedish rail infrastructure authority, to recycle dismantled rails. The initiative gives old rails a second life through steel remelting and reuse.
This summer, Trafikverket shipped 1,000 tons of used rails to Poland, followed by nearly 4,000 more. After being cut and prepared in Hallstahammar, the rails are transported by train and ferry to Świnoujście, then on to Dąbrowa Górnicza for melting and reuse in new railway and tram rails—many destined to return to Sweden.
“This project shows how circularity and innovation can go hand in hand,” said Tapas Rajderkar, Marketing Director at ArcelorMittal Europe. Trafikverket’s Fredrik Svensson added that the initiative supports its goal of minimizing environmental impact through closed-loop recycling.
